Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Shepton Mallet
Strong emotions can make daily life and relationships feel unpredictable. You may find yourself reacting quickly, becoming overwhelmed or regretting things you do when distressed. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) offers ways to understand these patterns and develop different responses.
At New Path Psychology, I draw on my training and experience in DBT to support people with difficulties managing intense emotions. We will discuss your needs and the level of support that is appropriate for you.
Understanding emotions without judging yourself
DBT combines acceptance with change. This means recognising the reality of your experiences while working on behaviours that are causing difficulties. It offers a compassionate framework for understanding why particular responses have developed and what you might do differently.
We will begin with your priorities and the situations that are hardest to manage, rather than expecting you to fit a particular description.
Skills for difficult moments and relationships
DBT includes skills in mindfulness, tolerating distress, regulating emotions and communicating effectively. These can help you notice what is happening, get through difficult moments and respond more deliberately in relationships.
The work may involve looking closely at a recent situation, understanding the sequence of events and considering where a different response could be practised.
Finding the right type of DBT support
DBT can be delivered in different formats. A comprehensive programme includes several elements, while individual work may draw on DBT principles and skills. At an initial discussion, I will explain the support available and whether it matches your needs.
If you are looking for DBT in Shepton Mallet or the surrounding Somerset area, please contact me to discuss the next step.
